Graduate Opportunities

Post Graduate Certificate in Management & Development

WhatEmployers look for...

When applying for jobs, no matter what yoursubject of study, employers always look at the personal qualities a candidatecan bring to the organisation, which is why it is so important to develop themASAP!!
Leadership and management skills are someof the most commonly required skills that employers list on their jobdescriptions, and in today’s competitive climate you need to tick all the boxesto be in with a shout.  Organisations (nomatter how big or small) are looking for employees to come to the table withfresh ideas, have the leadership skills to get people on board then themanagement skills to see it through. This is why there is much need for undergraduateplacements and graduate schemes, as students are current and understand the industry, bringing new ideas and suggestions which keep organisations relevant in today’sbusiness environment.

The reality...

It is all fine and well stating thatemployers look for these skills, but how do you show you possess them if this isyour first job and you have no ‘work experience’ to relate your skills back to?Many interviews and application forms feature the question ‘can you tell meabout a time you demonstrated.....’ If you have no experience it can beextremely difficult to prove to employers that you possess these skills.

PersonalExperience...

I am an undergraduate currently studying atNorthumbria university (business school) and I have seen many cases of fantasticstudents who do possess such skills and have a lot of potential , but have beenturned down for jobs as they have no experience to prove they have demonstrated these skills.
When it came to our second year (I am in my final year now) and we allbegan applying frantically for industrial placements, a friend of mine made itto every interview stage but was turned down for 11 jobs. None of us couldunderstand why, as he is an exceptional student making good grades and his CV stood out enough to get an interview, but he didn’thave the evidence to support his claims when asnwering the employers questions. Employers very rarely take risks whenit comes to recruitment which meant typically students with work experience orevidence that they have studied these skills through their modules weresuccessful when applying for placements.
So how do you gain evidence that you haveleadership and management skills if you don’t study a topic which covers theseareas and if it is your first job......?
